Steps to Success Mentoring

The DeKalb County Regional Office of Education Youth Mentoring Program was established to provide an additional support person to students in grades 6-12 to help them build essential Developmental Assets. Assets identify critical opportunities, relationships, and personal strengths that young people need to succeed.

The Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program aims to improve student attendance and increase their internal and external assets. The Program Mentor meets with Middle School and High School youth individually in the school setting to establish personal goals to promote a positive attitude and behaviors. The mentor acts as a listener, a role model, and a motivator. The mentor does not provide tutoring help with academics.

In addition to providing children with mentoring support, the Mentor can also help refer families to community resources through the IRIS, such as childcare, medical, dental, housing support, and mental health counseling, to ensure that each child will have access to all educational opportunities.
