Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human service works, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
Participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan:
*Listen nonjudgmentally
*Give reassurance and information
*Encourage appropriate professional healp
*Encourage self-help and other support strategies
Participants do not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling.
Northwestern Medicine, the DeKalb County Mental Health Board, and the DeKalb Regional Office of Education have partnered to offer Youth Mental Health First Aid free of charge and all are welcome. Educators will receive Professional Development Credits. Register by June 14.
